GUNUNG LEUSER PARK

Gunung Leuser in Aceh and North Sumatra is one of the last Rainforest Systems on Sumatra, which provides base for healthy populations of Sumatra Orang Utan, Sumatra Tiger, Sumatra Elephant, Sumatra Rhino, as well as many other endangered species on this island. The park area starts at an altitude of 0m in Kluet and reaches up to 3.404m to the peak of Gunung Leuser, which gave the area its name.

Pristine and untouched rainforests are hosts to an immense Biodiversity of more than 170 mammals, 320 birds and 190 reptiles and amphibians. 7 mayor river systems are floating from the heart of the Leuser Eco System to the east and west coast of Sumatra.

Several volcanoes are bedded within the Bukit Barisan mountains. Among the 10.000 plant species recorded in the West Indo Malayan Region, appr 45% can be found in this Eco System. Several eco systems can be found within the parks borders: beach forest, swamp areas, low land rainforest, alpine areas and mountain forest.

TREKKING

The Gunung leuser Park can in general only be visited with a local guide who has to organize the entry permits in advance for you and who makes sure you are safe and don’t get lost. Fees are between Rp. 50.000,- to 200.000 to enter the park. As I have been a guide for many years, I know the park very well and know where to find the animals and plants. But be aware that this is pristine wild rainforest and pure nature out there and that animal encounters cannot be ever guaranteed! But I can guarantee We will make you Secure, Comfort and Fun Fun Fun.The rainforests are very dense and progress on ground is difficult and slow. Nevertheless the view of primates (Thomas Leaf Monkeys and Sumatra Orang Utan), maquaqes, birds, reptiles and insects are very frequently.

I can offer tracks into the park from one day to two weeks all tailored to your time schedule and budget. To really enjoy your time and see plenty of animals, you should also spent the nights in the forests and plan your trip for at least three days. On my trips I always provide food and a tent (including sleeping bag and basic sleeping pads). Depending on the amount of people that are going on the trail I can also arrange for a carrier and cook. For single persons travelling: please note that I can only carry one tent due to the weight (which comes on top of the sleeping bags, pads, food and equipment). If you prefer to sleep in your own tent please let me know in advance so we can discuss options.

Trips can include night tracks, tracks to the Hot Springs (nature spa), waterfalls, or to a remote lake (very good for animal spotting!). To sight birds you should bring a pair of binoculars.
